Basic Trackday Preparation

With the TCC trackday post, and in conjunction with the HKS Trackday this coming Saturday. We are sure some of you like the idea of going to trackday.
You may ask, what should I prepare before going to trackday? We will attempt to answer that question today with our lists.
We will split the list into two section, inspection and maintenance before trackday and essential items to bring along.

.

.

Here is the list of inspection and maintenance that should be done on the car prior to trackday:

.

1.) Fluids to check/replace/top up as necessary such as:

a.) Engine oil

b.) Gearbox oil

c.) Differential oil

d.) Brake fluid

e.) Power steering fluid

f.) Coolant

.

2.) Check and replace brake disc/pad as necessary.

If your brake disc is looking like that, it probably is not a good idea to even drive it on the road.

.

3.) Inspect tyre for threadwear, rubber condition, manufacturing date and replace if necessary

Make sure the manufacturing date of tyre is more than 5 years old. Anything over 5 years old is dangerous to even drive on the road!

.

4.) Make sure wiper and signal work as normal

This is important as rain may fall on trackday and you would need to double signal during cool down lap.

.

.

Here is the list for 10 essential items you should bring to a trackday:

.

1.) Safety equipment and proper attire

Driver should wear their Helmet at all cost when they are in the track. Proper attire and shoes are strongly recommended. Pleas refer to trackday organizer for proper attire.Using safety equipment like HANS device will be most desirable especially if you are driving a car with roll cage.

.

2.) Spare fluids

Bringing spare fluid such as Engine oil, brake fluid, coolant etc will certainly not going to be a bad idea no matter when.

.

3.) Tyre pressure gauge

You will need to find the sweet spot of your tire, do not let them overheat/overpressure! It is also one of the most common way to adjust handling balance of your car as tyre react differently with different pressure/temperature.

.

4.) Common tools

Tools such as the common wrench and socket will come in handy.

.

5.) Car jack

You may need to rotate tyre for even wear.

.

6.) Racelogic/Vbox or simply download apps such as RaceChrono™(Android) or Harry’s lap timer (iOS) to collect data for analysis

Data collected will allow you to make further improvement and know more about your driving style. Racechrono or Harry’s lap timer is application that turn your phone into a data logger. However, data obtained with phone’s 1HZ GPS is kinda useless. For the serious user, Racelogic Vbox, Qstarz LT6000 or AIM Solo with their 10HZ or above GPS is desirable and the data accuracy is much better.

.

7.) Duct tape and Cable tie

You never believe how many lives has been saved by duct tape and cable ties.

.

8.) Portable ventilator axial blower

To circulate air through cooler after pit in, or just cool you down.

.

9.) If your trackday does not include a pit, bringing a tent is strongly suggested especially in Malaysia

.

10.) Finally, lots of water for both you and the car

.

The above list should cover most of the item you need to prepare for a trackday. So go out join some trackdays and have fun!
